The Beauty of Recycling

World Environment Day 2012

On the occassion of World Environment Day eCoexist presents the third Beauty of Recycling show in association with FabIndia Pune.

The aim of this annual event is to highlight the aesthetic and financial potential of waste and to inspire public to view waste as a valuable resource.

The event this year includes many activities each of which present a different aspect of waste.

1. Exhibition and sale of upcycled products

eCoexist has invited several groups that work on upcycling waste materials to make consumer products to come to Pune and exhibit and sell their items. These products are of a high quality and usually bring a benefit to waste pickers as well as the artisans involved in their making.

For 2012, we will be showcasing products made by

The Society for Child Development, Delhi - that works with mentally challenged young adults

Thunk - a designer group in Bangalore that works with rag pickers

Green The Gap, Delhi - a branch of the NGO Sweccha that also works with waste pickers

Earthworm Goa - an organic store that promotes recycling

eCoexist - our own range of recycled cloth bags

Global Exchange - a group that makes stationary products out of recycled paper made by recycling tetrapack

2. Dharavi Rocks

is a bunch of young adults and children from Dharavi who create music out of waste. Hosted by the Pune based drumming groups Taal Inc, Dharavi Rocks will be led by Varun Venkit in a performance on Sunday 10th June.

3. Drum Circle by Taal Inc

Taal Inc specialises in creating inclusive music. They have prepared a number of musical instruments using waste aluminium cans, paint barrels, industrial and automotive waste. A drum circle is an event where the entire audience is invited to participate and create music together. Varun Venkit, the founder of Taal Inc, known for his high energy has been studying the therapeutic effects of drumming for several years as part of his studies in clinical psychology.

On Saturday 9th June, Varun will be leading the audience in a drum circle using waste items.
