Eco certification
There is an excellent resource available on the subject of Eco certification in a study undertaken by the Bridgespan Group entitled Moving EcoCertification Mainstream, which analyses the need for and the value of certification for eco sensitive products.
Who would be interested in certification and why?
The consumers: To know that they are indeed getting what they are paying for, to see the direct benefit their money is creating.
The producers and retailers: To have a secure supply, to build or strengthen a brand and to respond to a consumer demand for certification
Certification procedures can only work in markets which are 'ready'. What makes a market 'ripe'? Education and building awareness.
Are Indian markets ready for certification procedures?
This can be said for 'Organic food' where people are now asking for certified products. Yet, for non food items, certification is limited to the field of Eco Tourism.
